Dear Vault-Boy,
Remorsefully, we didn’t work together long but like an irradiated mole rat going in for a second helping of my lower intestine, you sure left a mark. See to celebrate your, and Fallout’s, 25th anniversary I partnered with Bethesda Softworks and AKQA to ask fans to submit their favorite memories from the series in the form of love letters to their ever-combustible post-apocalyptic companion, you.
Then, we took a few of our favorite submissions and using the miracles of modern-day animation, a pinch of whimsy, and a dash of nuclear annihilation, we created a series highlighting their illustrious achievements for all to see.
Thank you, Vault-Boy. Unlike my limbs, the honor is all mine.
What’s a birthday without a quiz to prove your love?
I’m not sure but it sounds boring. That’s why we followed up the video series by creating an interactive quiz that allowed fans to revisit some of the most famous moments from the games and get a second chance at making some of the Fallout universe’s biggest decisions. In the end fans were finally told their rightful Fallout faction based on their answers—think of it like finding your Hogwarts house except with mutants.
Did all of that require me mapping out 16 different narrative paths, writing 150+ questions, 500+ answers, and 32+ unique results all in the voice of a 50s propaganda poster with a love of nuclear bombs? Duh. Now if you’ll excuse me I’m going to post some screenshots of it.
The Wasteland beckons.
To begin, fans were greeted with a sight they’re all too familiar with–waking up inside an irradiated titanium hull with a sense of purpose and several new tumors.
The expanse expands.
As new fugitives of their humble vault, users then come to their first choice—where to next
The journey begins.
Then, fans are off and limping, selecting through a series of questions all of which determine the next question, and their result. In the end, they’re invited to play again.
